More than two miles of the old Ring Wall, which dates from around 1250, encircles the old city with its church ruins. One part of the wall, known as the Sea Wall, was built to protect the wealthy citizens of Visby from pirates. Nearly 80 percent of all known Viking silverworks were found on the island of Gotland.
