When I arrived in Turku, Finland, earlier this week to begin a series of assignments, my trusty Macbook suffered catastrophic failure.
I was devastated. My Macbook contained years of photographs, videos and journals, photos of my children and of my travels. It contained accounting data for my business, contacts, music. My entire life, it seemed, was stored on that computer.
Not to worry. Several months ago, I signed up for a service called Backblaze. The service provides unlimited space on a server and software that continually monitors my computer and backs it up each time I am connected to the internet. As a result, my computer is always backed up to a remote location. The cost of such convenience: a mere $50 annually.
There are several vendors that offer similar services, but I prefer Backblaze for two reasons: Its software is easy to work with and non-intrusive, and more importantly, should I need my data, Backblaze will ship me a 450gb USB hard drive with all of my data on it, overnight, for $189.
I wasn’t sure that Backblaze was up to the challenge of getting me a hard drive in Helsinki, but sure enough, they did — for no additional charge.
I linked the USB drive to my new Macbook Pro (which I purchased in Finland) and within hours I was back in business, as if nothing had ever happened. The lesson for travelers – or for anyone who values their data — is to make sure your data is being backed up — at home, at your business, on the road and, yes, even at sea.

One standard for measuring service aboard cruise ships is the crew-to-passenger ratio. Theoretically, the more attractive the ratio (i.e., the more crew serving a single passenger), the better the service. It stands to reason that luxury ships would have the most attractive crew-to-passenger ratios, followed by premium category ships and mass market ships.

NK, also near Stureplan. And directly across the street is the large city shopping mall, Gallerian. Posted via from my Blackberry.
Situated in what is arguably the city’s trendiest district, Stureplan’s Biblioteksgatan is one of Stockholm’s most popular, upscale shopping streets. Posted via from my Blackberry.
Boats operate between Stockholm’s City Hall, a tourist attraction in its own right, and Drottningholm. Posted via from my Blackberry.
