The City and Port of Frederikshavn is situated 40km from the northernmost top of Denmark, also being the northernmost top of the European continent! Our location is directly on the route between Copenhagen and the Norwegian fjords. The Port situated directly on the east coast is easily navigable under all conditions. There are practically no tides, no air draft limit and pilotage is not compulsory.

The history of the port dates back to the 17th century, being built as a defensive installation for the Danish Navy against attacks from the Swedes. Throughout history Frederikshavn has been of great military importance still proven by several historical installations. The Powder Tower built in 1686 as part of the local Citadel, is situated adjacent to one of our cruise piers and only 300m away from the very centre of the city, with its pedestrian streets hosting a wide variety of shopping possibilities! Based at the Powder Tower one of Denmark’s best-known heroes ‘Tordenskiold’ protected Danish interests and kept Denmark and Norway solidly united as one kingdom throughout the Great Northern War (1709-1720). Once a year in summer the Great Northern war is fought again, with more than 1000 participants from the city of Frederikshavn as well as the countries Norway and Sweden. Cruise vessels calling at the Port of Frederikshavn will be met by a historic scenery directly upon arrival!

Centrally located between Aalborg at the Limfjord and Skagen at the very top of Denmark (each city can be reached within 45 minutes by bus), Frederikshavn is a convenient starting point for excursions to beautiful and historical buildings, castles and monasteries. Or guests can simply enjoy themselves in the relaxed and joyful atmosphere in the city centre or play golf at one of the four top class golf courses available within a 5-30 minute ride from the cruise pier.

An excursion in the varied landscape brings you from the desert-like dunes on the west coast, shaped from the salted westerly winds to the central lush river valleys between forest hills. On the west coast Europe’s best and cleanest beaches are to be found, 300km of unbroken sandy beaches with clean, fresh sea water. One of the few places in the world where you can drive your bus directly to the edge of the ocean.
