Korsoer is in the heart of Denmark, at the very foot of the imposing Great Belt Bridge – Europe’s largest suspension bridge. Korsoer is only a few nautical miles east of the shipping lane through the Great Belt, which connects the North Sea and the Kattegat with the Baltic Sea. Cruise ships coming to Korsoer will be placed in the middle of town, near the fortress built by King Christian IV around 1600.
Korsoer is an attractive old seaside market town situated in the southwestern corner of Zealand, the largest island in Denmark. It gained its market privileges as a borough town from Eric of Pomerania on 26 November 1425. The town was established at this spot because of its favourable location and proximity to Funen on the other side of the Great Belt. Even after the ferries were discontinued in 1998, Korsoer continues to function as the hub of Denmark and is the town with The Great Belt Bridge. Today about 15,000 people live in Korsoer city and 80,000 people in Slagelse municipality.
Korsoer town centre is situated close to the old harbour. The supermarkets and specialist shops in the town centre are always packed with special offers, exciting specialities and branded goods. You can always find a good deal among the market stalls, and there are live concerts and other events throughout the summer.
Leaving Korsoer itself, you will find yourself surrounded by majestic countryside and interesting tourist attractions that are well worth exploring. The forests, the beaches and the small towns are everywhere around Korsoer. A few kilometres away is Trelleborg, the old Viking fortification, where you will find the remains of the Vikings and a small Viking town.
In recent years, a considerable number of active artists and artworkers have established themselves in Korsoer, including several professionals. Many of them work and exhibit in their own workshops and studios, many of which are open to the public. Some of the cultural activities are gathered in the Cultural Centre, Halsskov and in the art centre, Kongegaarden. Also the old coastal battery, The Fortress, partly from medieval times, is worth a visit.
