When approaching the Island of Bornholm by sea and seeing the island emerge from the mist, Rønne harbour’s sea walls look like the wide, warmly welcoming arms of a giant. Behind the large harbour, visitors meet an unrivalled provincial charm and a uniquely beautiful and varied landscape on an island embracing so many qualities that after the first visit, one simply must return to gather new impressions. Just a few of the many features awaiting you on this island in the middle of Europe are its mild climate, amazingly varied landscapes, its small, idyllic fishing hamlets with well-preserved half-timbered houses which are hundreds of years old appearing as living town museums along winding, cobble-stoned streets, its vibrant community and tumultuous and exciting history – aspects responsible for the island’s nickname ‘the pearl of the Baltic’.
Today, Bornholm’s location in the middle of the Baltic is responsible for the island’s role as the centre of the new Europe, and many of the initiatives originating here are channelled, with help from the European Community, to Russia, the Baltic States and Poland in order to help these democracies raise their standard of living.
Besides Bornholm’s scenic diversions there are also a number of museums to choose from; a large interesting local history museum in Rønne, a defence museum, a working agriculture museum, fishing collections, a working quarry museum and a widely acclaimed art museum built on the most beautiful rocky area imaginable on North Bornholm.
Numerous artists and crafstmen live on Bornholm, inspired by the unique scenery. The island’s ceramists and glassblowers alike have created a way of living which is cherished by many tourists. There are four interesting round churches in Bornholm, which were built about 800 years ago for the combined purposes of worship, defence and storage of provisions.
Calling at Bornholm is an exciting experience on Baltic Sea cruises. Moreover, Bornholm’s central location makes it practical to call at the island on the way to other cruise destinations in the Baltic Sea.
