The Port of La Rochelle is one of the most easily accessible from the open sea on the French Atlantic coast, and can accommodate vessels up to 14m draught. Any cruise ship can berth quickly (less than 45 minutes between taking on a pilot and mooring) at any time (no tidal constraint) and in perfect safety (the Antioche Channel offers a large secure bay sheltered by the islands of Oléron and Ré). La Rochelle is the main port of call for the town of Cognac approximately 80km by motorway, or by charming country roads, which afford a progressive discovery of the region right to the heart of the Cognac cellars. Small villages with Romanesque churches are scattered along the old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela as well as ancient towns such as Saintes with its Roman arenas and triumphal arch, and Rochefort, a 17th century ‘new town’ built by King Louis XIV, with its breathtaking rope factory and the rebuilding of the Hermione, the ship which sailed the Marquis De Lafayette to the Americas. Once in Cognac, cruise passengers can enjoy a visit to the world famous cellars of Courvoisier, Hennessy and Martell. Cognac cellars are also to be found in La Rochelle, which has long been a port handling wine and spirits. A mere 15 minute ride from the port by shuttle bus or taxi, the medieval city of La Rochelle offers a most attractive mix of architecture from the Middle Ages to the present day, as well as a wide range of exciting shops. Wander around and discover that exquisite but previously unheard of brand of cognac or bring back a bottle of Pineau des Charentes. Enjoy an unforgettable lunch in one of the many restaurants. The old medieval port is famous for its 14th century twin towers – the crenellated fortress of Saint Nicolas and, on the opposite side of the harbour entrance, the Tour de la Chaine, named after the chain which used to be drawn across at night to keep out intruders. New excursions include:
- La Rochelle, gastronomic tour: in and around the market.
- The 3 ports of La Rochelle from the sea.
- Helicopter tour: the airport is only 3km from the berth, 2 companies provide this service.
- Ile de Ré by bicycle.
