Having navigated the long sheltered sea loch of Loch Broom, surrounded by majestic mountains and island views the busy fishing port of Ullapool will come into view. Developed as a herring port in 1788 by the British Fisheries society and Thomas Telford, Ullapool is steeped in local history. The harbour offers excellent protection from open waters, and has been recognised as a seafarer’s haven for centuries. The modern pier has been upgraded and enlarged several times in its 230 year history, and offers first class facilities to visiting vessels. Combine this with the spacious, sheltered natural deepwater anchorage and you have the perfect setting for welcoming cruise ships.
The daily life of the modern cruise ship passenger can at times be a little hectic, with multi destination itineraries combined with various shore excursions. Ullapool and the surrounding area is the ideal place to have a day off to relax, explore the area and relish the easy pace of life. Located within a short distance of the harbour the town has a selection of retail outlets to interest the visiting cruise passenger, crafts, woollen goods, tartans, tweeds, local pottery to name but a few. Spoil yourself by sampling some local cuisine from a variety of award winning cafes, restaurants and takeaways.
Why not down size and take a two hour trip on one of the local island hopping cruise boats, drink in the scenery and be at one with the wildlife.
For the more adventurous visitors the surrounding area offers unique and breathtaking experiences, Leckmelm Arboretum, Ullapool hill walk, Knockan Crag, Coigach Mountains and Lochinver road trip are all worth a visit. Excursions to more famous visitor destinations such as Inverewe Gardens, Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle and Falls of Shin are all within 100km of the harbour.
