We (Josefin Haraldsson of the Stockholm Visitors Board, left, and Ralph Grizzle, a contributor to this blog, right) took Rick Steves (center) to Vapiano, with two locations in Stockholm: in Gamla Stan and in Stureplan. Each year, the international restaurant trade magazine Restaurant lists the world’s top 50 restaurants. Among them are two Swedish restaurants, both in Stockholm: Oaxen Skärgårdskrog (ranking 32nd) in the Stockholm Archipelago and Mathias Dahlgren (ranking 50th), at the Grand Hotel.

Restaurang 1900′s web site, in Swedish only, says that the restaurant is all about the love of American cooking and culture. That may be true, but I wouldn’t expect to find this food back home. For a true Swedish experience in a lovely setting, try Restaurang 1900.

Restaurang 1900's bar is popular with the "after work" crowd. The bar won a competition for its cocktails. Recommended: Honey, with three types of rum, fresh lemon juice and fresh grape juice. Delicious.
I had dinner last night — okay, it was actually only a beer and bar snacks — at Niklas Ekstedt’s fine Restaurang 1900. One of Sweden’s most popular chefs, Niklas was away for filming of his cooking show, but whoever had a hand on the skillet — or carving knife — did a great job substituting for Niklas last night.
